J. Jonah Jameson, the former editor of the Daily Bugle, has moved online. He is writing a blog in an attempt to defame Spider-Man. In this montage of three issues, Jameson is starting to get some traction in the world of social media – “it’s the future!”. The Bugle has downsized and now has a fraction of the staff because news is delivered differently than in the hey-day of daily papers. Jonah is hot on the trail of a tip, but is trying to convince his friend, the new editor of the paper, Robbie Robertson, to throw the reputation of the Daily Bugle behind his blog, because, let’s face it, the internet is full of fake news.
Print news has experienced a lot of changes since the advent of the internet. Consumers of news do not want to wait for the morning paper to find out what is going on in the world. Creative destruction is the idea that as new businesses and jobs are created, they diminish old ways of doing things. In the case of news, the ease with which consumers can go on the internet or watch an all-news television channel might spell doom for the newsroom. Jameson is now an independent contractor. He can make money as a blogger, but he needs good content, and a following. The world of blogs is ultra competitive, and he hopes he can differentiate his product by tying it to a legitimate news source. Perhaps his new associate, Betty Star, can help.
