If Superman’s spaceship landed in the Soviet Union instead of Kansas would the world be different?  Based on the “Else worlds” story Superman Red Son there is no doubt about it.  Superman was raised on the teachings of Marx and Stalin.  When Stalin dies, Superman takes over in an attempt to bring the values of communism to the world.  In this clip Superman shows his command center to Wonder Woman, who confronts him with the question of whether spreading the communist vision is worth the costs.  He contrasts the state of the U.S.S.R. with that of the U.S.A.  To an outside observer, the data speak for themselves.

Wonder Woman is right to ask about the costs of Superman’s plan.  When you make a choice there are, by definition costs.  Are the costs of taking over the world worth the benefits, even if productivity and life expectancies rise?  This is a question at the core of Jeremy Bentham’s utilitarianism.  Is it ok for some to suffer if the greater good is made better off?
