In the inaugural Superman comic, we see the Man of Steel in action for the first time. He starts off by saving an innocent woman from an execution. They he saves another woman in a domestic violence situation. Finally, he discovers a corrupt deal between a Congress man and a weapons dealer trying to embroil the United States in a war. Pretty good for your first day of work.
Superman is known for fighting for “truth, justice, and the American way”, and that’s what we see here. He is protecting people from harm (the woman who is at risk from her rampaging husband) and upholding institutions like a fair and just legal system (making sure the woman isn’t executed). He is also fighting corruption which can inhibit economic growth.
Because Superman defends the rule of law, and that is important for economic fairness, perhaps we should say that he stands for “truth, justice, and the economic way”!
